The Hero Of Hacksaw Ridge

How does the creator use setting to help understand an important idea in our world?

Intending the key idea were  the text, The Hero Of Hacksaw Ridge written by Booten Hurndon which is set during World war 2  two specific settings which helped me to understand the key ideas were when he was court martial  and fused to carry a weapon. I think the author used these settings to help the audience understand the idea that you should stand up to your own beliefs because I think the author wants us to realise that in life your own beliefs are what you think they are.

A key setting which helped me to understand the message of Desmond Doss being court martial was when his dad walked in and handed the people a letter. This setting was described in the text as Desmond dad sticking up for him so he can stay in the army and doesn’t have to go to army jail until they finish fighting in the war. Desmond’s experience of this setting was targeted, this was evident when he was crying when they were about to kick him out of the army.

The way in which he reacted to the setting helps the audience to realise that Desmond is a very strong willed person and doesn’t let people walk all over him. Desmond found this setting challenging because he had no one on his side apart from his dad and his wife Dorathey. I think his struggles in this setting helped the audience to understand that this is a sad part in the story but he will make it through it. I believe that the author wants us, the audience, to know that he is a strong man and doesn’t let anyone tell him what to do. In our world today this idea is important/relevant. It teaches me to never let someone tell me what to do and always believe what I believe in.

Fire

I am in fire emergency in school and we are learning about smoke and panic are often deadlier than fire itself because they affect people much faster and more unpredictably. While flames cause burns, it is usually smoke and panic that lead to most deaths in fires.

Smoke contains toxic gases that can quickly overwhelm and suffocate people, often before the flames reach them. At the same time, panic causes people to make poor decisions, like running the wrong way, ignoring exits, or trampling others in their rush to escape. I have gotten this evidence from a online NZ firefighting site.

This shows that smoke inhalation and panic responses often pose a greater threat to life in fires than the flames themselves.

Community service

Community service plays a vital role in bringing people together and improving shared spaces. A community can be defined as a group of people who live in the same area or share common interests and goals. Communities thrive when their members look after one another and work together for the common good.

Recently I got to participate in a community project cleaning the tennis courts located in Kawakawa near the hospital. It hasn’t been used in more than 15 years. Our class had to clean up lots of grass and dirt. Over the years the courts had accumulated a lot of grass, dirt, and debris over time, making them unplayable to use. Our class did this so the community can start playing tennis.

The project involved several physical tasks. First we used shovels to remove the grass and dirt that had  built up a little mound of dirt and grass on the court. This work was hard and required strength and also steady teamwork. Once the debris was piled up I helped load it into wheelbarrows. Transporting the heavy loads from the courts to the trailer was hard but working together made the task manageable. We filled the trailer and transported the waste back to school and dumped it by the metal tech room.

One of the main reasons we helped do this project was to give back to our community. A clean and safe tennis court allows more people to enjoy sports and outdoor activities.

Personally, I gained several valuable lessons during this service project. I learned how to manage my time effectively—planning each stage of the work and making sure everything was done efficiently. The physical labor also improved my fitness and stamina. Most importantly, I saw the results of teamwork and cooperation, as everyone contributed their efforts and encouraged each other to keep going.

The Concept of a hero

The hero I have chosen is Martin Luther King Jr

Martin Luther King Jr is viewed as a modern day hero because he led the first African-American nonviolent demonstration with the bus boycott, which began in 1955 and was the beginning of the end of bus segregation. In the 11 years between 1957 and 1968, King travelled more than 6 million miles and spoke more than 2,500 times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action—all the while authoring five books and numerous essays.

He was born in January 15, 1929

Caulerpa

For our Social Studies class we have been looking at the topic of “Managing the environment”. As we are all Kaitiaki of our taiao it is important that we understand how we can ensure our Taiao is left in a better state and it is thriving for generations to come. More specifically we have been exploring the marine environment which has developed a ‘killer algae’ formerly known as Caulerpa.

Caulerpa was made in a lab. It was made for fish tanks and aquariums. It was mistakenly put into the drain to clean the tank walls and that is when someone was cleaning their fish tank some Caulerpa went down the drain and went into our water ways. This occurred in Monaco and was found in Coral bay. From there it was found in Australia then made its way to New Zealand mostly Great Barrier Island and it is even in our backyard of the Bay of Islands.
Caulerpa came from a lab made by people for fish tanks. Caulerpa is extremely dangerous for sea life. Because it grows very fast and acts like a carpet on the sea floor covering and killing the sea life. This is a problem for me because I like gathering and eating the Kai Moana, which will be the same for alot of other people.
Below are images I created, one is of a flow chart that looks at the origin of Caulerpa and where it has travelled over the world and the other image is a acrostic poem that I feel best describes Caulerpa.

Lake Omapere

Back in the Maori used to own 66 million acres of land the 34 million acres were taken off them now these days the Maori people only own 4 million acres. When the lake use to be healthy it use to hold up to 30 LB eels now its rare to catch 10LB eels. Omapere means O means kai Ma means for and Pere means the belly of the Taniwha. They also use to put dead bodies of the rocks at lake omapere and let them decomposed on there and that probably didn’t help the lake. Then after that they would take all the bones up a hill and bury them. In 2007 people interviewed people near the omapere lake. All the people that they interviewed were people that grew up living off the lake. Now they can’t even go swim in the lake or get eels from there ethier.Back in the day they used to have the heaviest lots of Kauri,Totara,Kahikatea. They harvest all of those because they grow close to the water’s edge.
After cutting all of those trees down there use to be huge stumps and that when the farming industries were just coming into play. They needed paddocks for the cows so they burnt all
The stumps to make paddocks and that polluted the lake. After burning the stumps the soil died.
When they were burning the stumps people in russell were catching seals and killing them then skinning them then putting them in the russell harbor. There were 100s of them floating
Back in the day they used to have eel farming industries. And they use to spear them and cart the out on horses. Some areas of the lake were sponge like and other parts were very polluted it was very dangerous to go there because you might sink. Also Australian settlers blasted rock in the area as they gum diggers.
The documentary on restoring lake Omapere relates to our topic “managing the environment because the lake used to be a thriving lake but now it’s polluted and toxic and not usable for the
Below is an image I created of all the things I have talked about in what I captured for this documentary.

power cut

during the power cut at school there was no power and it was fun because school was shout early. When we left school we went to my Aunty house because she has solar panels at her house and she had heaps of power so i was chilling with power.

10W SSC – Community Project

Kia ora
In our Social Studies class we have been working on proposing community projects. My partner and I wanted to propose an arcade in Kawakawa. We had been working on it for about 2 weeks. It took longer than usual but we got it done.

We chose this idea for the community so people don’t have to drive so far, like to Whangarei. And it would be a good place for teenagers to hang out and have so much fun. It would also be the best place to have a birthday party. It would also bring in lots of tourists and all that money that they spend at the arcade 10% of it could go back to the community. There will be lots of new job opportunities as well.

When we first thought of that idea we had to do a survey. Our survey was asking all the year 10s in Bay college if they wanted an arcade in Kawakawa. We got 22 responses to our survey and about half of them agreed and the other half didn’t.

Please click the image below to read more about our idea to propose and give us your feedback in the comments.

Thank you for taking your time to read out post. We look forward to reading your comments.
